Whether you’re visiting in December or sneaking in a quieter January getaway, the holiday charm in Helen sticks around and it’s so worth experiencing!

What Makes Christmas in Helen, Georgia So Magical
There’s just something about Christmas in Helen that hits different. The whole alpine village feels like it was made for the holidays. Between the twinkling lights, the cutest European-style buildings, and that cozy mountain backdrop that makes everything feel a little extra dreamy.
Even if you come in early January, the decorations are still up, the lights are still glowing, and the whole town feels like it’s wrapped in its own little snow globe moment!
What really makes it special, though, is how genuinely festive it feels. You can stroll around with hot cocoa, pop into locally owned shops, hear Christmas music drifting through the streets, and just slow down a little. And staying in a cabin during this season makes it even better. Waking up to chilly mornings, having a fireplace, and soaking in that relaxed holiday energy is something everyone should experience at least once.

Best Things to Do in Helen, Georgia for Christmas
1. Experience Christkindlmarkt Helen’s Christmas Market
If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering through a European Christmas Market but haven’t been ready to book that international flight, Helen’s Christkindlmarkt is honestly such a fun alternative. Think rows of little wooden booths, twinkly lights, the smell of cinnamon and warm treats, and so many handmade goodies you’ll want to take home.
You’ll find everything from ornaments and handcrafted gifts to snacks and hot drinks that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a tiny alpine town — without leaving Georgia. It’s completely free to walk around, and even if you don’t buy a thing, the vibe alone puts you right into that cozy holiday mindset.
Dates vary, but it’s typically the last weekend in November and first weekend in December. Check here for current years dates!
2. Explore Downtown
Downtown Helen during Christmas doesn’t just feel decorated, it feels transformed. The whole town lights up at night, the buildings look even more charming with garland and wreaths draped everywhere, and every corner feels like the perfect photo op.
Take your time strolling through the shops, grabbing a hot chocolate, and enjoying how cute everything looks. The best part is that even in early January, the decorations are still fully up, so you still get the full Christmas magic without the crowds.

3. Check Out the Christmas Parade
Helen’s annual Christmas Parade is as small-town charming as it gets. It includes festive floats, local performers, and Santa waving his way down Main Street. If you’re visiting on parade weekend, get there a bit early, it fills up fast!
The best place to be is across the street from the Downtown Gazebo. The Helen, Georgia Christmas Parade is typically a Saturday in mid-December, check this years date here.
4. Go Wine Tasting at Local Wineries
A cozy winter trip isn’t complete without a little wine tasting, and Helen seriously delivers. Stop by spots like Habersham Winery or Yonah Mountain Vineyards for pours that feel extra special during the holiday season. It’s the perfect warm-up between exploring the village lights, and the mountain views don’t hurt either.
5. Visit the Christmas Shoppe in Helen
If you love Christmas, the Christmas Shoppe is basically your Super Bowl. It’s packed wall-to-wall with ornaments, decor, and holiday collectibles. It somehow feels magical every time you walk through, no matter how old you are. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a souvenir ornament or add something new to your holiday decor. And yes, it smells like Christmas inside!

6. Fudge from Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen
Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen is such a classic Helen stop, and it somehow feels even more magical during the holidays. The whole shop smells like chocolate and nostalgia, and their homemade fudge is honestly some of the best I’ve ever had (it’s up there with Mackinac Island!).
They’ve been around since the 1970s, so they know exactly what they’re doing. Whether you go for a classic chocolate or something a little more fun, it’s the perfect treat to wander the village with. Plus, something about grabbing fudge from a candy shop in an alpine-themed town just feels right during Christmas time.

7. Lighting of the Village
If you’re in Helen the day after Thanksgiving, the Lighting of the Village is the perfect way to kick off the Christmas season. The town flips the switch at 5 PM and suddenly you’re surrounded by 8,000+ lights, a 20-foot Christmas tree, and the whole alpine village glowing in the prettiest way.
It’s a free event, super family-friendly, and has live music, local vendors, and a visit from both Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Even if you’re not usually a big “crowds and events” person, this one just feels wholesome and cozy like the start of a Hallmark movie.

8. Enjoy Authentic German Fare
One of the best parts about being in Helen during the holidays is leaning into the whole alpine vibe, and that absolutely includes the food. Two spots you have to check out are Bodensee and Hofbrauhaus Restaurant. Both serve classic German comfort dishes that fit the festive atmosphere perfectly.
Think warm schnitzels, bratwurst, pretzels, hearty sides… all the cozy, comforting food you crave on a chilly holiday trip. Bodensee feels a bit more intimate, while Hofbrauhaus sits right on the river and has a fun, lively energy. Honestly, you can’t go wrong at either. If you want the full Helen Christmas experience, grabbing at least one German meal is a must!

9. Visit Anna Ruby Falls
Even in the middle of winter, Anna Ruby Falls is such a beautiful sight. It’s one of the best waterfalls in Helen! The trail is a super easy, one-mile paved walk, and it leads you straight to a pretty stunning set of waterfalls.
The trail is open daily from 9 AM–5 PM, and it’s only $3 per person to visit. Just keep in mind: while the trail stays open, the visitor center and restrooms close on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Other than that, it’s totally accessible, and definitely worth adding to your Helen holiday itinerary.

10. Georgia Mountain Coaster
If you want a little rush between all the cozy, holiday vibes, the Georgia Mountain Coaster is one of the best things to do in Helen! It’s open seven days a week (weather permitting), and hours change often, so definitely check before you go.
At around $20 per ride, it’s not the cheapest thing in town… but honestly? Totally worth it. The kids had a blast, and we adults were laughing just as hard. It’s one of those quick, goofy little thrills that just sticks with you.

11. Sip Glühwein at King Ludwig Biergarten
Nothing gets you into that European-style Christmas mood like a warm cup of Glühwein, and King Ludwig Biergarten nails it. If you aren’t familiar, Glühwein is a hot, spiced wine that’s popular in Europe, especially during the winter and at Christmas markets. It’s made with warmed red wine and spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise.
12. Mindescapes Escape Room
We love an escape room moment, and MindEscapes ended up being such a fun surprise. The kids were fully locked in (no pun intended), and honestly, so were we.
It was the perfect little teamwork adventure, and even if you’re doing a kid-free trip, it’s still a blast. A great way to break up all the outdoor activities with something indoors, cozy, and super engaging.
13. Helen Fun Factory
This is one of those spots where everyone turns into a big kid. The Helen Fun Factory has go-karts, arcade games, and just that classic, goofy energy that makes vacations feel extra fun. It’s great for families, but also perfect if you just want an hour to play around and laugh!

14. Movie + Game Night In
One of the best parts about staying in a cabin (if that’s what you choose) is actually getting to enjoy it. We did a movie and game night in, and it was honestly one of my favorite evenings of the whole trip.
Grab some snacks, light a fire, cozy up, and just hang out, it’s the perfect slow moment to balance out all the exploring.
Where to Stay in Helen, Georgia for Christmas
Nothing says cozy Helen Christmas like staying in a cabin tucked away in the mountains. There are so many amazing options in and around town. I’m linking three great choices below so you can pick the vibe that fits your trip:
- In-town + waterfront cabin – This one is right in Helen, so you can literally walk to the village while still getting that quiet, tucked-away cabin feel. It’s set near the water, super scenic, and perfect if you want the convenience of being close to everything without sacrificing the charm.
- Arcade, fire pit + hot tub cabin – If you’re traveling with a group or you just want the full cabin experience, this one is such a fun pick. It has an arcade room, a nice fire pit area, and a hot tub, basically all the cozy winter-night essentials.
- Walk-to-town cabin with hot tub + fire pit – Another great option if you want to be close to town. This one has a super comfy setup with a private hot tub and a nice outdoor fire pit area, so it’s perfect for slow mornings and chill nights. The walkability is a huge plus during the holiday season.
Unfortunately the cabin we stayed in isn’t available anymore, but honestly these three are even better because they’re much closer to town. For all available cabin options during your dates check here! Or if you prefer hotels, check out what’s available for your dates here.
