As an Ohio girl turned Florida girl, there aren’t many places up north that give me those laid-back, beachy Florida vibes—but Put-in-Bay totally does. I have such distinct memories of visiting on field trips as a kid—leaving with a giant jawbreaker in hand—and my adult visits to the island have been just as memorable… but in a very different way (so much fun bar hopping).
Whether you’re planning a day on Put-in-Bay filled with wholesome fun or you’re coming for the party scene, this little island has something for everyone. From golf cart rides and waterfront views to fruity drinks and live music, there are so many fun things to do on Put-in-Bay!
In this post, I’ll cover where Put-in-Bay is, some of the best things to do, how to get there, and more.
Things to Do on Put-in-Bay
Whether you’re planning a day on Put-in-Bay or making a whole weekend out of it, there’s no shortage of fun, quirky, and unique things to check out. From island bars and historic landmarks to caves and colorful signs, here are some of the best things to do on Put-in-Bay!
1. Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial
This is one of the most iconic landmarks on the island. The 352-foot-tall monument was built to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
If you have time, take the elevator to the top—it offers incredible views of the island and even Canada on clear days! It’s a great way to take in the history and landscape all at once.
2. Kimberly’s Carousel
You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a ride on one of the oldest working carousels in the country. Kimberly’s Carousel is full of vintage charm, with brightly painted animals and an old-school vibe that feels super nostalgic. Take a ride on a chicken, pig, rooster, cow, or the island favorite – Pete the Perch!
Even if you don’t hop on, it’s worth stopping by just to take in the whimsical design and snap a few photos.
3. Kayak the Bay
Want to get out on the water? Kayak the Bay lets you explore the shoreline at your own pace. Whether you’re paddling solo or with a friend, it’s such a peaceful way to see a different side of the island.
Rentals are available by the hour, and it’s a fun way to break up a day filled with food, drinks, and exploring.
4. South Bass Island State Park
This lakefront park is perfect if you’re looking to relax and enjoy some nature. You’ll find shaded picnic areas, rocky shoreline views, and plenty of space to just unwind. It’s also a great sunset spot if you’re staying into the evening.
This is one of the quieter parts of Put-in-Bay, and it’s a great place to reset.
5. Bar Hop
The bar scene on Put-in-Bay is a big part of the fun, and bar hopping is basically a must. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Mojito Bay – A laid-back beach bar where you can swing (literally) while sipping your drink with your toes in the sand.
- The Keys – The northernmost bar on the island, with a fun tropical vibe and a replica of Key West’s Southernmost Point Buoy for photo ops.
- Round House Bar – A lively island staple with live music and a super energetic crowd.
- The Fish Bowl – Known for its oversized drinks served in literal fishbowls. Fun, casual, and always a good time.
Each spot has its own personality, and they’re all within walking distance making it easy to bounce between them!
6. Put-in-Bay Sign
You know the trip didn’t happen if you don’t get the photo. The Put-in-Bay sign is located near the docks and is a quick but classic stop. Snap your pic when you arrive or as you’re heading out—either way, it’s a fun way to mark your visit.
7. Visit the Island’s Caves
There are two caves on Put-in-Bay that are open to the public! Feel free to just check out one, or visit both if you’re feeling up for it!
- Perry’s Cave is larger and has a small underground lake. It’s the more popular option and is located near other attractions like mini-golf, gem mining, and the Butterfly House, so you can knock out a few spots in one go!
- Crystal Cave is part of Heineman Winery and holds the title for the world’s largest known geode. The walls are covered in glittering blue celestite crystals, and it’s one of the most unique things to do on Put-in-Bay.
8. Heineman Winery
Heineman Winery has been around since the 1800s, and is the oldest family owned and operated winery in Ohio! You can do a winery and Crystal Cave combo tour. The ticket includes a tour and a glass of wine, which is always a win.
I used to love their pink Catawba, but this time I tried the Sauterne—it had a light lemony note that I really enjoyed! Their little wine garden is also a great place to relax for a bit. Be sure to grab a few bottles for the road!
9. The Butterfly House
If you’re looking for something peaceful and low-key, The Butterfly House is a sweet little escape filled with hundreds of butterflies. It’s right near Perry’s Cave, so it’s easy to pair the two together. It’s especially fun if you’re with kids, or just love pretty things.

This one is such a cool roadside-style attraction. The Benson Ford Ship House is literally an old freighter ship that’s been converted into a private home perched on the cliffs of South Bass Island.
You can’t go inside, but you can get a view of it from the outside, and it’s definitely one of the most unique homes you’ll ever see.
11. DeRivera Park
Right in the heart of downtown, DeRivera Park is a great spot to take a break between shopping and bar hopping. You’ll find shady spots to sit, swings, and a fountain—plus public restrooms if you need a pit stop. It’s a great central spot to regroup, especially if you’re visiting Put-in-Bay with family or just want a break from the action.
12. Rent a Golf Cart or Bike
If you’re doing a day on Put-in-Bay, renting a golf cart is non-negotiable. It’s seriously the best way to get around and explore at your own pace. I was actually shocked at how affordable it was! You can rent one for as low as $20/hour. You will never find them that cheap in Florida.
If you’re looking for something a little more active, renting a bike is also a great option!
Where is Put-in-Bay?
If you’re wondering where Put-in-Bay is, it’s a small village on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, just off the northern coast of Ohio. You can get there by ferry from Catawba Island or Port Clinton, and once you step off the boat, you’ll instantly feel like you’re on island time.
To give you an idea of just how small it is, I went to college with someone who actually went to school on the island, and her graduating class was four people. Four! The whole place is walkable or golf cart-friendly, and it has such a fun, unique charm that makes it feel totally different from the rest of Ohio.
How to Get to Put-In-Bay
If you don’t have your own boat, don’t worry—the Jet Express and Miller Ferry are the two main ways to get to Put-in-Bay. Each one has its pros, so it just depends on what works best for your plans.
Jet Express
The Jet Express is the more popular passenger ferry. It departs from Port Clinton and drops you off right in the heart of downtown Put-in-Bay, which is super convenient if you want to be close to all the shops, bars, and attractions. It’s a high-speed, passenger-only ferry, and it runs later in the evening than the Miller Ferry, so it’s a great option if you’re planning to stay late or want to make a full night of it.
- No vehicles allowed
- More expensive than Miller Ferry
- Drops you off downtown
- Offers late return trips
Miller Ferry
The Miller Ferry departs from Catawba and docks at the southern end of the island. It’s a little farther from downtown, but golf carts and taxis are available right when you arrive. Miller Ferry is also more budget-friendly and the only option that lets you bring a vehicle across, which is ideal if you’re staying for the weekend and want to have your car with you.
- Allows cars, bikes, and walk-on passengers
- More affordable than Jet Express
- Does not drop off downtown (but you can rent a golf cart or take a taxi)
- Last trips run earlier in the evening than Jet Express
No matter which ferry you choose, you’ll want to book in advance during peak season, especially on weekends or holidays. And if you’re just planning a day on Put-in-Bay, make sure to check the return times so you don’t miss your ride back!
Where to Stay on Put-in-Bay
If you’re planning a weekend on the island, booking early is key, especially during summer and event weekends. Put-in-Bay is small, and places fill up fast. While you won’t find super modern hotels here, that’s honestly part of the island’s charm. Here are a few great options for where to stay on Put-in-Bay, depending on your budget and style:
- Ahoy Inn Guesthouse – An adults-only spot just a short walk from downtown, and the rooms are clean and cozy. You’ll still be close to the action without breaking the bank.
- Put-in-Bay Resort & Conference Center – For a step up, check out Put-in-Bay Resort & Conference Center. It’s just a few blocks from downtown and has one of the best pool scenes on the island with a swim-up bar. They also offer a complimentary continental breakfast Monday through Friday.
- Islander Inn – The rooms aren’t ultra-fancy, but the pool area is amazing, and it’s one of the highest-rated spots on the island. Bonus—it’s usually not too much more than the mid-range options, so it’s worth it if you want to elevate your trip just a bit.
No matter where you stay, you’re never far from the fun. The island is small enough that everything’s just a short golf cart ride away! Check out all available options for your dates here.
