Packing for Amsterdam can feel a little tricky because the weather doesn’t always make up its mind, especially in the spring and fall when temperatures can swing throughout the day. If you’re putting together your Amsterdam packing list, the biggest thing to remember is that layers are your best friend.
Amsterdam is known for its canals, bike culture, and incredibly walkable streets, which means you’ll likely spend most of your trip outside exploring neighborhoods, wandering markets, and strolling along the water. Because of that, packing smart can make a big difference in how comfortable you are throughout the day.
When we visited in early March, the weather varied a lot more than I expected. One day I was perfectly comfortable in just a sweater while walking around the city, and another day I was still chilly even with a coat on. Between the shifting temperatures, wind, and occasional rain showers, it’s definitely a destination where being prepared for a little bit of everything helps.
In this guide, I’m breaking down exactly what to include on your Amsterdam packing list, from essentials you’ll want year-round to seasonal items depending on when you’re visiting.

No matter when you visit, there are a few things I’d absolutely recommend adding to your Amsterdam packing list. The city is very walkable, the weather can shift quickly, and you’ll likely be out exploring for long stretches of the day.
- Comfortable walking shoes – You’ll be doing a lot of walking in Amsterdam, so this is probably the most important thing to pack! These ones are my usual go-tos, but for this trip, I actually took these ones for a fun pop of color. Both shoes have done me well, walking 30,000+ steps/day.
- A crossbody bag – Something secure and easy to carry is ideal for long days of exploring.
- Portable charger – Between maps, photos, and looking up directions or restaurant recs, your phone battery can drain fast.
- Universal travel adapter – A must for charging your electronics if you’re visiting from outside Europe.
- Reusable water bottle – Easy to carry around while you’re out all day, and great to have for your flight too.
- Compact umbrella or rain jacket – Rain can pop up unexpectedly, so having one of these with you is always a good idea.
- Layers – Even outside of the colder months, Amsterdam’s weather can change throughout the day.
- Sunglasses – Even if the forecast looks mixed, you’ll be glad to have them when the sun comes out. I’ve lost so many pairs while traveling that I stick with these cheap but cute ones now because apparently I can’t be trusted.
- A small day bag or tote – Helpful for carrying snacks, a camera, or anything you pick up while exploring markets.
- Skincare essentials – Cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen to keep your routine simple while traveling. These are my must-packs! I put them in these travel containers.
- Makeup basics – Pack whatever you typically wear day-to-day so you don’t overpack. These are my makeup must-haves.
- Dual-voltage hair tools – If you plan to bring a straightener, curling iron, or hair dryer, make sure they are dual-voltage. If they aren’t, using a converter can still blow a fuse or damage the tool. I’ve had this wand and waver for years, and they’re always with me on my trips!
These basics will cover most trips to Amsterdam, and the seasonal sections below will help you decide what clothing to add depending on when you’re visiting.
What to Pack for Amsterdam in Spring (March–May)
Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Amsterdam, especially because of tulip season, but the weather can be a little unpredictable. Temperatures typically range from about 45–65°F (7–18°C), and you can experience sunshine, wind, rain, and chilly mornings all in the same day.
When we visited in early March, the weather varied more than I expected. One day I was comfortable walking around the city in just a sweater and skirt, and another day I was freezing even with a coat on. Because of that, layering really is the key to packing for Amsterdam in spring.
Here are a few things I’d recommend bringing:
- Lightweight sweaters – Perfect for layering throughout the day.
- A medium-weight jacket or coat – You’ll likely need this, especially in the mornings and evenings.
- A scarf – Great for warmth and easy to remove if you get too warm.
- Gloves – Mostly necessary in early March, but I really wished I had packed a pair. Your hands can get pretty chilly while walking or biking around the city.
- Comfortable jeans or trousers – Ideal for long walking days. These baggy wide-leg jeans and these trousers were super comfy!
- Water-resistant shoes – Spring rain showers are pretty common.
If you’re visiting in spring, packing layers you can easily add or remove will make your days much more comfortable.

What to Pack for Amsterdam in Summer (June–August)
Summer is one of the busiest times to visit Amsterdam, thanks to the warmer weather and long daylight hours. Temperatures typically range from about 60–75°F (16–24°C), though occasional heat waves can push it a bit warmer.
Even in summer, Amsterdam can still experience breezy evenings and the occasional rain shower, so it’s still a good idea to pack a couple of layers.
Here are a few things to include on your Amsterdam packing list for summer:
- Lightweight tops or t-shirts – Breathable fabrics will keep you comfortable while walking around the city.
- Light dresses or casual outfits – Great for warm days and canal-side dinners.
- Comfortable shorts or lightweight pants – Depending on your style preference.
- A light jacket or cardigan – Evenings can get cooler, especially near the canals.
Summer is also a great time to pack outfits for canal-side restaurants, wine bars, and outdoor terraces since much of the city comes alive outside.
What to Pack for Amsterdam in Fall (September–November)
Fall is an underrated time to visit Amsterdam. The canals lined with autumn colors are beautiful, and the crowds start to thin out compared to summer.
Temperatures usually range from about 50–65°F (10–18°C) early in the season and gradually cool down as winter approaches. Rain becomes more common during this time of year as well.
Here are some fall packing essentials:
- Sweaters and layering pieces – Perfect for changing temperatures throughout the day.
- A trench coat or medium-weight jacket – Great for cooler days.
- Comfortable jeans or trousers – Ideal for exploring the city.
- Water-resistant shoes or boots – Helpful with fall rain.
- A scarf – Adds warmth and is easy to remove if needed.
Fall is a great time for long walks along the canals and cozy cafe stops, so comfortable layers make all the difference.
I use Fashion Pass for most of my trips — it’s a clothing rental service! Since I live in Florida and don’t really own coats, I rented a few fun ones instead of buying, and it was the best way to get pieces I normally wouldn’t purchase. They also have so many cute outfits!

Winter in Amsterdam can be chilly, but the city also feels incredibly cozy during this time of year, especially around the holidays when lights and Christmas markets appear.
Temperatures typically range from about 35–45°F (2–7°C), and wind can make it feel even colder, particularly near the canals.
Here’s what to pack for a winter visit:
- A warm winter coat – This will be essential for staying comfortable outdoors.
- Sweaters and warm layering pieces – Great for staying warm while exploring.
- Thermal layers or long sleeves – Helpful on especially cold days.
- Warm scarf, gloves, and a hat – The wind can be strong in winter.
- Waterproof or insulated boots – Ideal for cold, wet weather.
- Thick socks – Your feet will thank you after long days of walking.
Even in winter, you’ll still spend a lot of time outside exploring the canals and neighborhoods, so packing warm layers and weather-ready shoes will make your trip much more enjoyable.
Also, if you plan on going to the markets, they often have scarves, hats, coats, and more for sale! I bought a hat and scarf, and I wish I had had room for another coat. So many great options, and good prices!

Amsterdam Packing Tips
- Pack layers whenever possible. Amsterdam weather can change quickly throughout the day, so having pieces you can easily add or remove will make exploring the city much more comfortable.
- Comfortable shoes are essential. You’ll likely end up walking several miles each day while exploring canals, markets, and neighborhoods, so footwear can really make or break your trip.
- Expect at least some rain during your visit. Even when the forecast looks promising, a small umbrella or lightweight rain jacket is always a smart thing to carry.
- If you can, bring water-resistant shoes. Between occasional rain and lots of time spent walking near canals, your feet will thank you.
- Stick to mix-and-match outfits when packing. Neutral clothing pieces make it easier to create multiple outfits without overpacking.
- There’s no need to pack overly fancy clothing. Amsterdam style is generally casual and relaxed, even in many restaurants and wine bars. Everyone’s style here felt effortlessly cool.
- Before packing hair tools, check that they are dual voltage. If they aren’t, using them with a converter can still blow a fuse or damage the device.
- Plan for plenty of walking. Even if you occasionally take trams or rent a bike, most days will involve a lot of time on your feet.
- Leave a little extra room in your suitcase if possible. Between markets, boutiques, and local shops, Amsterdam makes it very tempting to bring home souvenirs.
