Trying to figure out if the I Amsterdam City Card is worth it can feel a little confusing at first. There’s a lot included, a few key things that aren’t, and depending on your travel style, it can either save you money or not make much sense at all.
I used the pass during my trip to Amsterdam, and after actually using it throughout the city, I got a really good feel for when it’s worth it… and when it’s not.

You can choose a pass ranging from 1 to 5 days, and it starts the first time you use it. One thing to keep in mind is that it runs on consecutive hours, not calendar days. So if you activate it at 2 PM, it will be valid until 2 PM on your final day.
The card is designed to make exploring the city easier and more seamless, especially for first-time visitors. Instead of buying individual tickets for museums, transportation, and activities, everything is bundled into one pass, which can save both time and money depending on how you plan your trip.
What’s Included in the I Amsterdam City Card
The I Amsterdam City Card includes quite a bit, which is why it can be such a good value if you plan to stay busy during your trip.

Some of the most popular included attractions are places like the Rijksmuseum, Moco Museum, Our Lord in the Attic, and several smaller museums you might not have otherwise considered, but are actually really interesting.
I also loved having transportation included. Being able to hop on and off the metro without thinking about tickets made getting around the city so much easier, especially when we were going between neighborhoods.
What’s Not Included in the I Amsterdam City Card
As great as the I Amsterdam City Card is, there are a couple of important things to know about what’s not included.
Two of Amsterdam’s most popular attractions are not covered by the pass:
Both of these require separate tickets, and they often sell out in advance, so you’ll want to plan ahead if they’re on your list.
Also, even for some attractions that are included with the card, you may still need to reserve a time slot in advance. The card covers your entry, but it doesn’t always guarantee walk-in access. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s definitely something to be aware of so you can plan accordingly and avoid missing out on anything you really want to see.
I recommend downloading the app after you get your pass. It was super helpful for us in planning and knowing what we needed to reserve in advance.
How the I Amsterdam City Card Works
The I Amsterdam City Card is really easy to use, but there are a couple of details that are important to understand before you activate it.
Your pass starts the first time you use it, whether that’s for transportation, a museum, or an activity. From that moment, it runs on consecutive hours, not calendar days.
For example, if you activate a 72-hour card at 2 PM on your first day, it will be valid until 2 PM three days later.

The I Amsterdam City Card is available in 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5-day options, with pricing increasing based on the length of your pass.
Prices can vary slightly, but they typically start around €70+ (about $75+ USD) and go up from there depending on how many days you choose.
Since pricing can change, I recommend checking the most up-to-date rates before your trip.
If you’re planning to visit multiple attractions and use public transportation regularly, the cost can add up quickly on its own, which is where the card can really start to make sense.
Is the I Amsterdam City Card Worth It?
This really comes down to your travel style and how you plan to spend your time in the city.
It’s worth it if:
- You plan to visit multiple museums or attractions
- You’ll be using public transportation often
- You like having a more structured itinerary
- It’s your first time in Amsterdam, and you want to see a lot
It might not be worth it if:
- You prefer to wander neighborhoods, cafe hop, and take things slow
- You’re not super interested in museums
- You’re only in Amsterdam for a short time and don’t plan to pack your days
- Most of your plans are free or low-cost activities
But if you have one day where you want to go all in and hit a bunch of the top attractions, you can always grab the card just for that day and really maximize it.
Tips for Getting the Most Value Out of the I Amsterdam City Card
If you decide to get the I Amsterdam City Card, a little planning can go a long way in making sure you actually get your money’s worth.
- Start your pass early in the day so you get the most out of those consecutive hours
- Group attractions by area to save time and avoid unnecessary travel
- Visit multiple attractions per day to maximize the value
- Use public transportation often instead of relying on Ubers when going from neighborhood to neighborhood

You definitely don’t need to over-plan your trip, but having a rough idea of what you want to see each day makes a big difference.
Final Verdict: Is the I Amsterdam City Card Worth It?
The I Amsterdam City Card can absolutely be worth it, but only if your itinerary lines up with what it includes. If you’re planning to visit multiple museums, take a canal cruise, and use public transportation throughout your trip, it’s a really convenient way to bundle everything together and can easily pay for itself.
But if your trip is more focused on wandering neighborhoods, eating your way through the city, and taking things slow, you might be better off skipping it and paying as you go.
