26+ Best Things to Do in Downtown St. Petersburg, Florida: A Local’s Guide

Downtown St. Pete has my heart! I have lived in the Tampa Bay area since 2017, and this is still one of those places I never get tired of exploring. There is always a new restaurant opening, a mural I somehow missed, a cute market popping up, a museum exhibit I need to see, or a waterfront sunset that reminds me why I love it here so much.

If you are looking for the best things to do in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, this guide is for you, whether it is your first visit or your hundredth. I wanted this to feel less like an overwhelming mega-list and more like a best friend sending you the spots that are actually worth your time: the classic must-dos, the artsy local gems, the cute daytime activities, the food and coffee stops, and yes, the fun nights out too.

Best Things To Do In Downtown St. Pete

1. St. Pete Pier

If someone only has a few hours in downtown St. Pete, I’m probably sending them to the St. Pete Pier first. It’s one of the best free things to do in St. Pete, and it gives you such a good little taste of the city: waterfront views, public art, restaurants, green space, pop-up events, and that dreamy skyline view that never gets old.

Go during the day to walk the pier, watch people fishing, grab lunch, or let the kids run around. Go closer to sunset if you want the prettiest golden-hour views. I also love that the Pier District is big enough to make a whole low-key afternoon out of it without feeling like you need a strict plan.

2. Murals In The Central Arts District

One of my favorite things about St. Pete is that the city feels like an open-air art gallery. The murals are everywhere, and the best part is that they keep changing. Thanks to the SHINE Mural Festival, new pieces pop up often enough that even if you have done a mural walk before, you can still find something new.

You can absolutely wander on your own, especially around the Central Arts District, but if you want more background on the artists and meaning behind the pieces, a guided mural tour is such a fun way to see the city through a more local lens.

3. The Dalí Museum

Even if museums are not usually your thing, The Dalí Museum is different. The building itself is stunning, the waterfront location is gorgeous, and Salvador Dalí’s work is the kind of art that makes you stop and stare because there is always something strange and brilliant hiding in the details.

This is one of the most iconic things to do in downtown St. Pete, but it does not feel like a stuffy “check it off the list” museum. The Dalí Museum is home to one of the most impressive collections of Salvador Dalí’s work outside of Spain, which is such a cool thing to have right here in St. Pete.

It is also one of the few museums I will happily go to over and over again because they are always bringing in fun new exhibits and experiences. One of the coolest additions is Dalí Alive 360° (additional timed ticket required), an immersive dome experience that surrounds you with Dalí’s art, music, and movement in such a dreamy, surreal way!

General admission is currently around $32 for adults, $29 for seniors, $22 for students and teens, $12 for kids ages 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under.

Local tip: If you want to save a little, go on Thursday after 5 PM. The museum offers half-priced Gallery Admission from 5-8 PM.

4. More St. Pete Museums

The Dalí gets a lot of attention, but St. Pete has such a strong museum scene beyond it. If you are building a day around art, I would pick one or two museums instead of trying to cram them all in. This city is better when you leave room to wander.

• Imagine Museum – contemporary glass art that is way cooler than you might expect if you have never been.
• Chihuly Collection – vibrant glass sculptures and glass-blowing demos.
• Museum of Fine Arts – a beautiful Beach Drive museum with a little bit of everything.
• St. Petersburg Museum of History – perfect if you want more local history and a quick stop near the pier.

Little treat tip: If you end up at the Museum of Fine Arts, check whether Cafe Clementine is open and grab one of their baby cakes. They are adorable and delicious, which is my favorite combination!

5. Sunken Gardens

Sunken Gardens is technically just north of the downtown core, but it is too special to leave off this list. It feels like stepping into a lush little tropical escape, with winding paths, palms, flowers, butterflies, and the cutest flamingos.

The gardens are over 100 years old, and it’s one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Tampa Bay! You can expect a peaceful self-guided stroll through shaded pathways, koi ponds, tropical landscaping, and little hidden corners that make it feel like you fully stepped out of the city for a bit.

This is the kind of St. Pete activity I love pairing with a coffee stop or brunch! It usually takes about an hour or so to walk through, depending on how slowly you wander and how many photos you stop for.

Admission is currently $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $8 for kids ages 2-12.

6. Vinoy Park

Vinoy Park is one of those places that makes me so happy to live near St. Pete. You have the waterfront, the open green space, the palm trees, the breeze, and the perfect amount of people-watching. Bring a blanket and snacks, grab takeout nearby, or keep it simple and just walk along the water and keep an eye out for Pete, the resident dolphin.

If you want to be a little more active, this area is great for biking, scootering, or bringing out your rollerblades (these are the cutest pair of rollerblades ever BTW). And if your ideal park day is more horizontal, a hammock is such a cute move here when you can find the right trees.

7. Coffee Shops

St. Pete has an elite coffee shop scene, and I will never stop using coffee as an excuse to explore a neighborhood. For downtown, Coffee Concrete is one of the coolest and most delicious coffee shops in St. Pete! It’s tucked inside Form43 in the Warehouse Arts District, and the space has this edgy, artsy, industrial vibe that feels so perfectly St. Pete. The drinks are seriously so good too, so it is not just cute for the sake of being cute.

Speaking of matcha, Daycation is a must if you love matcha. Honestly, their coffee drinks are equally as good, and the specialty drinks they serve are truly unique!

8. Local Bookstores

I have such a soft spot for a good bookstore, and St. Pete has a few that I always love recommending. Book + Bottle is perfect if you want to browse books with coffee or wine in hand, which is honestly a genius life concept. It also made my list of the best wine bars in St. Pete.

Tombolo Books is another gem with that cozy indie bookstore feel. I love pairing it with Black Crow Coffee nearby and pretending I am just going to “look around” when we all know that is a lie.

And then there’s The Book Lounge, which is literally one of the cutest bookstores I think I’ve ever been in! It’s right on Central Avenue and has such a cozy, whimsical feel with books, board games, sips, snacks, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.

9. Downtown St. Pete Restaurants

The food scene in downtown St. Pete is one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back. It is genuinely hard to pick favorites because there are so many good restaurants, and the list changes all the time. For a first visit, I would choose based on the vibe you want:

• Brunch: The Library or Perry’s Porch
• Waterfront lunch: Fresco’s
• Fun dinner: Good Fortune, Wild Child, or Juno & the Peacock
• Elevated: Fortu or Mei
• Unique: In Between Days or Lolita’s Wine Market

10. Central Park St. Pete

One of the newer additions that makes downtown feel even more fun is Central Park St. Pete, a multi-level food hall and social space downtown. This is a great option when your group cannot agree on one restaurant or when you want to pop in for a bite, a drink, and a little exploring without committing to a full sit-down meal.

Because it is new and still evolving, I would check the current vendor lineup before you go. But that is also kind of the fun of St. Pete right now: there is always something fresh to try!

11. Local Markets

If you are in town on the weekend, a market stroll is such a St. Pete way to start the day. The Saturday Morning Market is a classic, with produce, local food, handmade goods, flowers, and live music. It is one of those places where you go “just to walk around” and then somehow leave with coffee, a pastry, produce, and a little something you absolutely did not plan on buying.

I also love keeping an eye out for pop-ups like Mezzo Market and Indie Flea around town. Mezzo Market is my personal favorite, and I feel like most people would agree it is one of the best markets in St. Pete. It is always packed, but for good reason.

The local vendors are amazing, and you can find everything from shell jewelry and vintage clothes to fun art prints, handmade candles, ceramics, plants, home goods, accessories, food, drinks, and cute gifts you absolutely did not plan on buying.

12. Local Boutiques

Downtown St. Pete is dangerous if you love cute shops. Central Avenue and Beach Drive both have plenty of boutiques, gift shops, home stores, and artsy little stops that make wandering way too easy.

A few shops rotate, relocate, or change hours over time, so I like treating this as a “wander and see what you find” activity instead of a rigid shopping checklist. That said, Poppy Jane is one I have loved for trendy pieces, and Shoreline Sugars is a St. Pete staple!

13. Creative Workshops

St. Pete is such a creative city that it feels only right to make something while you are here. This is one of my favorite categories for a girls’ day, date day, rainy afternoon, or “we want to do something besides eat and drink” plan.

• Sugar Cream Clay – one of my personal favorites for pottery painting and cute creative energy.
• Practically Pikasso – paint-your-own pottery in downtown St. Pete.
• Zen Glass Studio – glass-blowing workshops if you want something a little different.
• The Candle Pour – blend your own custom candle scent.
• Scrap Happy – scrapbooking events where they provide the supplies (select dates, so check their schedule).

14. FloridaRAMA

FloridaRAMA is one of the quirkiest indoor activities in St. Pete, and I mean that as a compliment! It is immersive, colorful, interactive, and full of rooms created by local artists. It feels like walking through a weird little Florida dream world.

This is one of the best things to do in St. Pete, especially when it’s raining, brutally hot, or you just want something that is not a traditional museum.

Admission is typically around $30 for adults, $24 for children ages 4-12, and free for kids 3 and under.

15. Floridian Social

Floridian Social is such a stunning downtown St. Pete venue! The building dates back to 1924, and you can feel that historic charm the second you walk in. It has that dramatic, old-school theater feel with gorgeous Art Deco details, but still feels fun and modern.

Depending on the night, you can catch live music, themed parties, performances, private events, and other special programming. This is one I would check the calendar for before going, because the experience really depends on what is happening that night. If there is a show or event that lines up with your plans, it can make for such a fun downtown night out.

16. Games, Mini Golf, + Arcades

If your group likes an activity with a little competition, downtown and Grand Central have some fun options. Right Around the Corner is a classic for arcade games and craft beer, Park & Rec has that high-energy bar-game setup, and Par Bar is a fun mini golf option if you want something playful before or after dinner.

You can also find axe throwing nearby if your idea of bonding involves throwing sharp objects at a target. Honestly, fair.

17. Private Karaoke

If you love karaoke but do not love singing in front of an entire bar, Good Fortune’s private karaoke rooms are such a fun move! You get the full dramatic pop-star moment with your friends, minus the pressure of strangers watching you commit fully to your questionable song choice.

I especially love this as an after-dinner plan because Good Fortune is already such a vibe for sushi and cocktails. Dinner, karaoke, then maybe dancing after? That is a very St. Pete night.

18. Jannus Live

Jannus Live is one of the coolest venues in downtown St. Pete (and all of Tampa Bay, honestly) because it is an outdoor courtyard tucked right into the middle of the city. The energy is always so fun, and you are already steps away from bars and restaurants before or after the show.

I saw Gryffin here and still think about how good that night was. Definitely check the calendar when you are planning your trip because a show can turn a normal St. Pete night into the best kind of memory.

19. St. Pete Breweries

St. Pete has a great brewery scene, and while I do not think drinking needs to be the first thing on your itinerary, it can definitely be a fun part of a downtown day. 3 Daughters Brewing is still one of my favorites because it is huge, lively, and full of games, live music, ciders, seltzers, and plenty of beer options.

I would also check out Cage Brewing and Right Around the Corner if you are around Grand Central. If you are planning a St. Pete bachelorette trip, birthday, or group outing where the goal is very much “let’s make this a party,” the Trolley Pub can be a fun add-on.

20. Mazzaro’s Italian Market

Mazzaro’s Italian Market is not right in downtown St. Pete, but it is absolutely worth the short drive. This place is legendary for a reason. It is part Italian market, part deli, part bakery, part coffee shop, part wine shop, and honestly just a full sensory experience.

You can grab a deli sandwich, browse the fresh pasta, cheeses, meats, olive oils, wine, desserts, and prepared foods, or just wander around pretending you are not about to leave with way more than you planned. It does get busy, especially around lunch, but that is part of the Mazzaro’s experience. If you love food, this is one of those St. Pete stops you need to do at least once.

21. Downtown St. Pete Bars And Nightlife

Downtown St. Pete is so fun for both day drinking and nightlife, and one of the best parts is how walkable everything is. You can easily pop around Central Ave, grab a drink somewhere casual, wander into a rooftop bar, and end the night dancing without needing to over-plan it.

For dancing, I love Good Night John Boy and My Rich Uncle. Good Night John Boy is probably on everyone’s list of fun bars in St. Pete! It has that fun retro disco vibe, and My Rich Uncle is one of the newer spots that actually gets people on the dance floor.

If you want something more hidden and vibey, Dirty Laundry is one of my favorite speakeasies in Tampa Bay. It looks like a laundromat from the outside, but once you’re in, it turns into this Havana-inspired cocktail lounge with great drinks, music, and such a fun atmosphere.

And of course, St. Pete has plenty of amazing rooftops if you want drinks with a view. The Canopy, Pier Teaki, Cane & Barrel, and Sparrow are all great options depending on your vibe. 22. Boat Tours

You do not have to go all the way to the beach to get a gorgeous water day. From downtown St. Pete, you can book boat experiences like a snorkel and dolphin tour, a booze cruise with Cruisin Tikis, or any of the other amazing boat tours in St. Pete!

I did a sunset Cruisin Tikis tour and had the best time. You bring your own drinks and snacks, the captain handles the rest, and the skyline views are just so good. It is touristy in a way that I fully support.

23. Rays Game At Tropicana Field

If baseball season lines up with your visit, a Tampa Bay Rays game can be such a fun downtown plan. The Rays returned to Tropicana Field for the 2026 season, so you can once again build a St. Pete day around the ballpark.

I would start at Ferg’s before the game because it is the classic pre-game move, then walk over to the Trop. Even if you are not a huge sports person, the tailgate energy, food, and indoor stadium break from the Florida heat can make this a really fun afternoon or evening.

24. Pool Day

A pool day is such a fun way to enjoy St. Pete when you want the sunshine without fully committing to a beach day. Moxy St. Petersburg Downtown has a rooftop pool with downtown views, the Sip N Dip Pool Bar, and pool party events that pop up throughout the summer. Their Pink Palm Pool Club parties are usually the ones to watch for!

If you want more of a relaxed hotel pool day, check ResortPass to see which St. Pete hotels are offering day passes, cabanas, or daybeds. It is basically the easiest way to “crash” a hotel pool without booking an overnight stay. Prices vary by hotel, but St. Pete pool day passes usually start around $25-$35, with cabanas and daybeds costing more.

25. St. Pete Beach

Downtown St. Pete and St. Pete Beach are different vibes, but they pair so well together. If you are visiting for a weekend, I would absolutely build in beach time. Spend the morning downtown with coffee, murals, and the pier, then take the SunRunner or drive over to the beach for soft sand, beach bars, and sunset.

26. Sandbox VR

Sandbox VR is such a fun option if you want something totally different from the usual downtown St. Pete plans. It is a full-body virtual reality experience where you and your group wear VR headsets and motion-tracking gear, then get dropped into an immersive game together.

They have different experiences, including adventure, action, and even spooky options, so it is great for groups, birthdays, date nights, or rainy days. Pricing starts around $39 per person, but it can vary depending on the experience and time, so I would book online and check current pricing before you go.

A Few More St. Pete Activities

If you have already hit the big downtown stops or you just like having options, here are a few more activities I would keep in your back pocket:

• Weedon Island Preserve – boardwalks, trails, kayaking, and a peaceful nature break northeast of downtown.
• Beech Kombucha – a fun alcohol-free-ish tasting room option with plenty of kombucha flavors, including some boozy ones.
• Local festivals and pop-ups – St. Pete always has something going on, from art festivals and food events to maker markets, seasonal pop-ups, and waterfront festivals. It is definitely worth checking local event calendars before your visit because there is a good chance something fun is happening while you are in town.
  • A couple of my favorites are Reggae Rise Up, which usually happens in March, and Savor St. Pete, which typically happens in November and is one of my favorite fall events in Tampa Bay!

Getting Around Downtown St. Petersburg

Downtown St. Pete is very walkable, especially around Beach Drive, the Pier District, and Central Avenue. If you are planning to bounce between neighborhoods, biking, scooters, rideshare, or the SunRunner can help depending on your route.

The SunRunner is especially useful if you want to go from downtown to St. Pete Beach without dealing with beach parking. It runs between downtown and the beach with multiple stops along the way.

If you need a rental car for a bigger Florida trip, Discover Cars is worth checking out. For downtown-only exploring, though, I would only rent a car if you are also visiting the beaches, other Tampa Bay neighborhoods, or taking day trips.

Parking tip: Downtown can get busy, especially on weekends and event nights. I usually check garages like Sundial Garage or use metered parking if I get lucky.

Where to Stay in Downtown St. Petersburg

If you want to be able to walk to restaurants, museums, rooftops, and the pier, staying downtown is absolutely worth it. If beach time is the priority, stay on St. Pete Beach and come downtown for a day or night out. For a first St. Pete trip, I honestly love splitting time between both if your schedule allows.

• The Vinoy: the iconic pink luxury stay with waterfront views and classic St. Pete charm.
• The Birchwood: a boutique Beach Drive option with rooftop views.
• AC Hotel St. Petersburg Downtown: sleek, modern, and close to a ton of restaurants and bars.
• Moxy St. Petersburg Downtown: playful, social, and great if you want a newer downtown hotel.
• Hollander Hotel: quirky, historic, and usually a more budget-friendly downtown option.
